About the Data Architecture Expert certification
The Data Architecture Expert certification is the capstone credential of the BC Skills data ladder. It is an exam-only, proctored-style assessment: there is no bundled course — you are expected to arrive with deep, hands-on data architecture experience and demonstrate judgment, not recall. The exam is scenario-heavy and trade-off driven. Almost every question puts you in front of a real business constraint — a latency budget, a consistency requirement, a governance mandate, a cost ceiling, a freshness SLA, a schema-evolution need — and asks you to choose the best architecture, storage layout, or data model among several plausible options, then understand why the tempting alternatives are inferior. Domains assessed at expert depth: enterprise data architecture and strategy; warehouse vs lake vs lakehouse selection; dimensional vs Data Vault vs One Big Table modeling and slowly-changing-dimension strategy; the data mesh paradigm (domain ownership, data as a product, self-serve platform, federated computational governance); batch vs streaming vs unified (Kappa/Lambda) architecture; distributed-system trade-offs (CAP/PACELC, consistency models, partitioning and sharding); storage, file-format and table-format selection (Parquet, ORC, Avro; Iceberg, Delta, Hudi); data quality, data contracts and observability; master data management; metadata, catalog and lineage; data governance, security and privacy (GDPR, PII, RBAC/ABAC, encryption, masking); cost and performance optimization at scale; migration and modernization strategy; real-time vs near-real-time decisions; and MLOps / feature-store integration. The credential is platform-agnostic: principles transfer across Snowflake, BigQuery, Databricks, Redshift and open lakehouse stacks. Candidates must already hold the Data Engineering Professional and Big Data & Streaming credentials; this expert exam builds directly on both. Validity is 24 months.
